Every year I like to complete a wire sculpture project with the 9th grade students. This year we mixed it up a little and used soda cans too!
The inspiration for this project came from Ken Vieth's awesome book, Engaging the Adolescent Mind. This book has a ton of great ideas to make art personal and interesting for teenagers. In the past, students have created wire portraits inspired by Alexander Calder. This year we looked at Calder's "Only Only Bird" to start the project.
Students began the project by creating a wire armature using pliers to twist, turn and securely join one piece to another. Next, the soda cans were cut and shaped into feathers using scissors. I went through and punctured all the soda cans first. The students then used scissors to cut the can vertically and to cut both the top and bottom off. This left them a rectangle of aluminum to cut their feathers out of. The feathers were glued to the armature using hot glue guns.
