Gustav Klimt's Tree of Life

Here are the 3rd grade renditions of Gustav Klimt's Tree of Life! The students began by drawing trees and filling their trees with different patterns. We transfered the images to styrofoam printing blocks and printed on black and white paper using gold ink.  They came out charming!

Charley Harper Cardinals

I ADORE this project and it looks like others do too because my picture from last years artshow has been "pinned" quite a bit on Pinterest! A twist on traditional cardinals, students viewed Charley Harper’s highly stylized animal illustrations for inspiration.

After viewing several works by Charley Harper, students described his style as bold, simple, colorful, and whimsical.

Production

Step 1: Draw a Horizontal Wavy Line across a white 11x17" sheet of paper.

Step 2: Cut on the line and glue the bottom half to the bottom of 11x17"sheet of gray construction paper.
Step 3: Use old book pages to create simple trees. Glue the trees to the horizon line. I have an old dictionary that is falling apart that we used for our trees.
Step 4: Create birds using colored construction paper and shapes. Create a whimsical effect by adding berries, snow falling, birds nests, sticks on the ground, etc.
